Artists are Explorers and Pioneers

Never thought I’d have anything in common with Picasso, but I too can say, “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

Today’s Art Quote

I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.
Pablo Picasso

Some of the people I’m closest to have referred to it as a disorder. I can’t tell you how many times throughout my life I’ve fielded the question, “When are you going to settle into one art form?” But I somehow manage to brush off their comments because little brings me as much satisfaction as learning how to do something new.

Pablo Picasso is probably best known for his paintings and his sculpture, though he also left the world with a collection of ceramics, drawings, prints, tapestries, and rugs. Right now, I specialize in stained glass and Bauernmalerei from different regions. Over the years, I’ve also caned chairs, made cut and carve candles, sewn clothes and home décor, refinished furniture, laid tile, sculpted figures out of both salt dough and polymer clay, dabbled in ceramics and photography, and recently have been learning taxidermy. I may even have forgotten a few…

What about you…

Leave a comment and tell us what you’ve dabbled in and what you specialize in and leave a link to your online store if you have one.

  1. I dabbled in jewelry some time ago but it didn't stick until the last couple of years. I was obsessed with candlemaking for several years and still do that for gifts. I made tons of little decorated boxes. A friend and I made gift boxes with soap and scented oils. Hopefully my next creative urges will be in the jewelry making arena though I've had a bit of a yen to do some papercrafting. And someday, when retired, I hope to cook just a fraction of the many MANY recipes I've saved over the years.

Gotta run, wax on the burner and I'm experimenting with a solid scented body oil. Yum.

  2. I too share your need for artistic variety, not just to create but also to admire the work of others. For years I collected and sold antique porcelain, Prussia, Germany, Limoges, to name a few. Hand painted pieces were my preference. I have designed clothing and interior decor, created and sold floral designs, painted with oils, acrylics and water colors and sketched drawings. Now, I am designing and creating jewelry. Who knows what will be next?

  3. Hi Coco,
Great Article!!! I am like you I have dabbled in many arts/crafts, and am always looking for something new. I recently have been taking classes to learn the Art of Stained Glass, I know why you love it so much, that bug bit me quick. Actually went and bought more glass today. I sew, work with polymer clay, some painting, some wood working, bead making. I don't think it's that I get bored easily, my mind just has a vast area that thinks it needs filled, and I suppose, arts and crafts are the thing that is filling it in.
Thanks for your article, it was great.

  4. Hiya Coco,
Oh I've dabbled and become obsessive over many different crafts from the time I was a little girl. Nana would teach me how to do something and then I would go out and do it my way. I designed doll clothing, knit and crocheted clothing, stone art, string art and others before the age of 10. Hopefully I'll be crafting til a very old age. And I'll always do it my way...lol

  5. Hi Coco, I do suppose most of us have dabbled in other crafts and types of designing. My first was crochet as a girl, and a bit of macrame (oh doesn't THAT tell you how old I am!). I've also done silk flower arrangements, just for me and family/gifts, plus latchhook (OMG, another 20 year old craft). But jewelry has "stuck" as my passion and creative outlet. Teri

  6. One art? pshhhhh . I have tons of arts.
I have done each of these: crochet, knit, scrapbook, paint, draw, sew, woodcutting, & pottery.
Presently I am considered to be a sewer & crocheter. I think we all go through "seasons" if you will of each craft.

  7. Hi Coco~! Settle into one art? GASP~! You might as well turn off all inspiration right now. Experimenting and learning is what art (of all forms) is all about and one is fed by the other, don't you think? I love blending other art forms into my jewelry work.... braiding, crocheting and "sewing" with metal and transferring objects from one art form to another, like paintings into pendants and paper into beads...... Loved your article and thank you so much for sharing~!

  8. What a great blog post! I couldn't agree with you more. I have yet to settle on a single craft/art. I find myself sticking with some longer than others but I'm always excited to find a new creative outlet!
